Stonemason

Christoph Kurz

The artworks of Christoph Kurz show in every detail his great passion to create something new with his hands from raw materials! As a trained stonemason, he uses other expressive raw materials in addition to his cherished stone element, with which he builds sculptures and figures that deal with red-hot topics: Do we live in an equal world? How do we deal with the sensory overload in the social media? Can we still live self-determined lives when consumerism rules us?
From sawdust, epoxy resin, PU foam, aluminum sheet and acrylic, Christoph Kurz has created the first woman on earth, “his Eva”. Eva is joined by a second female figure made of similar raw materials, who appears as the “creator of the world”. Kurz does not shy away from major philosophical and social themes implicit in his artworks and invites his audience to allow for new perspectives and food for thought.

BORN 08.05.1984 in Salzburg

After finishing school I spent 10 years working in the hospitality industry. In 2015 I decided to undertake a stonemason apprenticeship which I completed in 2017 and a year later I began running my own workshop.
Since then, my small company not only creates works from stone, I also experiment with wood, traffic signs, epoxy resins, artificial grass, moss and anything else which can be found.
What excites me about my work is how readily available everyday materials can be transformed into defined works . I mostly work intuitively and rarely use sketches or models.
My work is often about everyday situations, conflicts between people of power (abuse) or simply about love and respect (of which, unfortunately, a lack prevails.

“From the small Salzburg studio to the big art stage to China” – This is how one could summarize the career of Christoph Kurz. Some of Kurz’s artworks have left their home venue in Austria, as they are presented to an international art audience in the Chinese metropolis of Chongqing. The Hong Art Museum and the Pashmin Art Consortia, which acts as Christoph Kurz’ art management, are preparing for the second major art event this year.

His previous biblical motifs, such as the new cross for the parish of St. Severin or his work with “Eve and the Creator”, attracted the attention of the press.

And also his last exhibition in the summer of 2021, which took place in the Pashmin Art Gallery Hamburg, where he exhibited “the golden thinker” and “Eve and the creator”, were featured by GLOBAL ART MAGAZINE. This led to further press publications.
